Clockwork

Clockwork moves with a heavy kind of patience.

A deep, downtempo trip-hop groove sits at the centre of the track, driven by a fat, weighty beat that gives everything a slow and deliberate sense of movement. The atmosphere begins somewhere dark and enclosed, as if something is quietly turning underneath the surface.

A clockwork is, at its simplest, a mechanism of moving parts. Gears turn, teeth engage and one movement drives the next. Through this precisely controlled motion, a clock can measure the passing of time.

Time becomes movement.

That idea seems to sit quietly inside Clockwork. The beat has the feeling of a mechanism already in motion, each hit connected to the one before it and the one that follows.

But the track doesn’t remain in the dark.

As it develops, the atmosphere gradually opens up. The groove stays heavy and grounded, while something brighter begins to emerge around it. What starts almost mechanical and shadowy slowly becomes more uplifting.

There is something satisfying about that transformation. The mechanism keeps turning, but the feeling changes.

That feels very much at home on Momentum. Movement does not necessarily mean speed. Sometimes it is simply one thing driving the next, continuously, until enough movement has accumulated to change the state of everything around it.

Clockwork turns that idea into a slow, heavy groove — a track about rhythm, repetition, time and the quiet force of things that keep moving.

Clockwork is on the album Momentum by Morpher — a collection exploring movement, energy, perception and the invisible forces that carry things forward.
